Stunted Growth in the Equality State

Strictly speaking, Wyoming isn’t doing all that bad as a state. As of 2017, poverty was below the national average at 11.3%, about 67% of the population was working, and average household income was $60,938, just $1,000 shy of the national average. Unemployment was on par with the national average and all but 14.5% of the population had health insurance coverage. However, what those numbers don’t reveal is just how limited opportunities to get ahead are in Wyoming. Outside of the tourism industry, well-paying jobs are few and far in between.

While Wyoming could best be described as ‘steady,’ it certainly isn’t growing at an accelerated rate. Between 2017 and 2018, the population only rose by about 2,000 people. Partially, this is because neighboring states like North Dakota have more opportunities for young people looking to make more money. Moreso, it’s because living in Wyoming is significantly more expensive than other states. In 2019, the Wyoming cost of living index ranked groceries at 107.2, healthcare at 133, and housing at 117. Overall, Wyoming’s cost of living index ranked at 106. This means that many people make a stable income but still struggle to pay their month-to-month expenses.

Wyoming Laws and Regulations for Bad Credit Personal Loanscredit score

Wyoming is severely lacking in legislation that protects borrowers from predatory lending practices. For consumer loans, no maximum interest rate is given, except in the case where no written contract was signed. In such instances, Wyoming Statute 40-14-106(e) stipulates that the interest rate will default to seven percent per annum. Otherwise, interest rates are whatever the lender and borrower agree to. For payday loans, which are small amounts borrowed at high rates over short periods, there are some stricter terms, but far from sufficient to protect borrowers from being cheated out of their money.

Wyoming Statute 40-14-362, which governs payday lending, does not set a maximum amount that payday lenders can offer to borrowers. The most that borrowers will have to pay back their money is one month, and finance charges are capped at either $30 or 20% of the value of the loan, whichever is greater. That allows payday lenders to charge what equates to a 780% APR. On the positive side, the law forbids rollovers, nor can borrowers use a new loan from the same vendor to pay off an old one. However, borrowers can simply go to another payday lender to get a fresh loan, perpetuating a cycle of debt.
